Tips For Winter Property Safety

Tips For Winter Property Safety

The weather is still cold, and the days are still short — it is important to ensure that your property is safe for the rest of these winter months. You can do many things to ensure that your home and yard are well-protected during the winter season.

Here are some tips to help you stay safe and secure during this time of year.

Inspect Your Roof and Gutters

The roof of your home or building is the first line of defense against snow and wind, so it's important to inspect these areas. Check for any loose or missing shingles, clogged gutters, or downspouts. Clearing out debris in your drains will help prevent water damage due to freezing temperatures. You should also check that all around vents on your roof are sealed properly to prevent any drafts from coming through them.

Protect Outdoor Fixtures

Outdoor fixtures such as lamps and fountains should be disconnected from their power sources before the extreme cold weather sets in. If they're not detached, they could be damaged by freezing temperatures. Additionally, furniture cushions should be stored indoors over the winter months to prevent them from becoming wet and moldy due to snowfall. Rain barrels should also be drained of any excess water before the freeze sets in, as frozen water can cause them to crack or leak later on down the line.

Check Windows and Doors

It's important to check windows and doors for cracks or drafts that could allow cold air into your home or building during the winter months. Any windows or doors that aren't properly sealed should be caulked or insulated with weather stripping to keep out drafts. Also, storm windows should be installed if necessary—these provide extra protection against harsh winds while allowing natural light into your home or business space during the day.
