Apple Picking on Long Island 2023

Apple Picking on Long Island 2023

There’s something about the fall season that makes going apple-picking an absolute must! The fresh cool air, vibrant colors painted across the landscape, and rows upon rows of ripe, juicy apples just waiting to be plucked off their branches. Apple picking has become a beloved fall tradition over the years, and for those planning on making the most of the season on the island, you’re in for a treat.

With so many orchards and farms to choose from, it can be hard to know where to start, but have no fear! This guide will help you navigate the world of apple picking on Long Island so you can make the most out of your autumnal experience.

Planning Ahead

Before anything else, it’s important to know that each farm has its own set of rules, so it’s always good to do some research beforehand. Now, let’s talk logistics. The majority of the farms offer both pick-your-own apples and pre-picked apples for those who prefer just to buy them to take home. If you choose to go the pick-your-own route, you’ll typically pay by the bag or basket (which they’ll provide for you), with some farms even offering all-you-can-fit bags for those looking to really stock up.

It’s also good to note that many farms have additional activities such as hayrides, corn mazes, and petting zoos, so make sure you know what’s included in the admission price before going.

When Should You Go?

In terms of timing, it’s wise to plan your trip around peak harvest times. This can vary depending on the apple variety. Still, generally, you’ll want to head to the orchard between early October and early November to ensure you get the freshest, tastiest apples possible. Additionally, many farms will update their website or social media pages with information on what varieties are available for picking, so be sure to check those out before heading out.

Locations to Consider

Long Island is home to some of the best apple-picking destinations in the country, and with so much variety, there’s something for everyone. Here are some of our favorite spots:

  • One of the most popular apple-picking destinations on Long Island is Harbes Farm and Orchard in Mattituck. Not only do they have over 27 acres of apple trees, but they also offer live music, pig races, and even a vineyard for those looking to sip on some wine while they pick.
  • Another great option is Wickham’s Fruit Farm in Cutchogue. Founded in 1661, Wickham’s is the oldest working farm on Long Island and has over 300 acres of apples to choose from.
  • For those looking for a more low-key experience, Woodside Orchards in Aquebogue may be the perfect pick. They’re known for their hard cider, which you can sample while enjoying the scenery of their 25-acre orchard.

Whether you’re looking for a family-friendly adventure or a romantic date, apple picking is the perfect way to kick off the fall season. So pack a picnic, grab your reusable bags, and head out to one of Long Island’s orchards for a day you won’t forget. Happy picking!
